2nd annual STEM Showcase event at VMNH
2nd annual STEM Showcase to celebrate exceptional STEM projects of regional students
Elementary school students from Franklin County, Henry County, Martinsville City, Patrick County, and Pittsylvania County to present award-winning projects at Virginia Museum of Natural History
The Southwestern Piedmont STEM Education Collaborative (SPSEC) is set to celebrate the achievements of area elementary school students during the 2nd annual STEM Showcase at the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Saturday, April 8. The event provides an opportunity for regional students in 3rd through 5th grades to showcase their STEM-related projects to the public. Each participating student will be chosen by his or her school or school division within the Southwestern Piedmont region, which includes schools located in Franklin County, Henry County, Martinsville City, Patrick County, Pittsylvania County, as well as Henry County Home Educators.
"The STEM Showcase is an excellent way to recognize exceptional science and STEM-related projects in a public setting, while also highlighting the importance of STEM literacy within our region," said Sydney Brown, who serves as an education coordinator at the Virginia Museum of Natural History and one of the event's lead organizers.
The event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 8. Admission to the museum will be free during this time. All projects will be located in the museum's Harvest Foundation Hall of Ancient Life.
Over 100 students participated in last year's inaugural event, which was well received by both visitors and participants.
"Last year's event was a huge success and the quality of the projects presented was inspiring," said Brown. "We're looking forward to seeing what this year's participating students will bring this year."
