YES! Teen Camps
About
The YES! (Youth for Environmental Stewardship) Teen camp program is a series of summer day camps for middle school students. Campers will travel to local parks, including Frank Wilson Park, Fairystone State Park, and the new Richard P. Gravely Nature Preserve, to experience hands-on nature studies and outdoor adventures. Camp fee includes swimming, canoe rentals, and snacks.
Schedule
Wet and Wild
June 23 – 26 (Mon- Thurs)
9AM – 3PM
Campers will explore the rivers, lakes and streams in our area, and investigate what’s beneath the surface of the water. Test the quality of local water, discover aquatic life in it, learn about our watershed, go swimming and floating on Fairystone Lake, and finish up with a fun canoe trip on the Smith River. Swimming and canoe rental fees are included, and snacks and water will be provided. Bring a bag lunch for a picnic each day. Be prepared: You Will Get Wet!
$75 non-members, $65 members*
*Price includes fees for a three-hour canoe trip on the Smith River
Forest Explorers
July 7 – 10 (Mon – Thurs)
9AM – 3PM
Come spend a
week in the woods! Campers will explore the forests of the Blue Ridge Foothills. Take a hike and learn about forest conservation. The group will practice orienteering with a map and compass, and then use a GPS unit to map forests and trails and go on a special geocaching hunt. Swimming fee is included, and snacks and water will be provided. Bring a bag lunch for a picnic each day.
$55 non-members, $45 members
Eco-Adventure
August 4 – 7 (Mon – Thurs)
9AM – 3PM
Campers will learn all about the ecology of Virginia. Discover the plants, animals, soil, and water systems that make our area of the state special. The group will travel to various parks to explore the natural history of the piedmont and foothills and discover the fun outdoor activities they have to offer. Swimming fee is included, and snacks and water will be provided. Bring a bag lunch for a picnic each day.
