VMNH Executive Director Dr. Joe Keiper, several curators (Drs. Alex Hastings, Kal Ivanov, and Nancy Moncrief), and other Research and Collections staff (Christina Byrd and Krystal Davis) recently hosted a one-day Youth Curator Camp at the Museum.   They presented a variety of hands-on, inquiry-based programs to a group of enthusiastic 6-to-12 year olds.

Dr. Joe Keiper shows the campers how scientists use magnification to examine insects and other small animals.

Activities included identifying fossils and studying insects using different kinds of magnification.  Campers were encouraged to closely examine evidence and reach conclusions based on their observations.  They also watched a demonstration of techniques for making exact replicas of scientific specimens, and each camper painted a replica tooth to take home.

Campers examine reindeer teeth as Dr. Alex Hastings makes replicas of the teeth for them to paint.
