Several curators (Drs. Alex Hastings, Kal Ivanov, and Nancy Moncrief) along with several technicians (Christina Byrd, Liberty Hightower, and Lucy Treado) recently participated in Roanoke College’s annual event, “Darwin Day,” on his birthday (February 12).

The theme of this year’s event was “orchids.”   Darwin studied wild orchids and wrote extensively about the co-evolution of orchids and insects that pollinate them.  VMNH staff displayed a variety of specimens, including insects that pollinate wild orchids in Virginia, fossil insects from the Solite quarry, and birds that pollinate orchids in other parts of the world.

Below is a photo of (from left) Lucy, Christina, and Alex interacting with some of the students who visited the VMNH display.
