Hours & Admission
The Virginia Museum of Natural History is open Monday through Saturday and closed Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The museum offers low admission rates and unlimited free admission for museum members.
- Grapes & Grains - Please note that the museum will close at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 18 in preparation for the Grapes & Grains fundraising gala taking place that evening.
- Summer Discovery 2013 - This promotion takes place May 26 to September 1, 2013! During this special promotional period, the museum will be open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. (the museum is normally closed on Sundays).
Hours
Monday - Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is currently offering extended hours every Tuesday until 7 p.m.
Admission Fees
$5 per adult
$4 for college students, senior citizens, and active military personal
$3 for children ages 3-18
Free for members and children under 3
ASTC Passport Program
The Virginia Museum of Natural History is pleased to be a part of the ASTC Passport Program (Association of Science-Technology Centers). The program allows members to sample some of the world's most exciting science centers and museums when they're on vacation or visiting family and friends--and to save money while doing it. Families and adults who are members of their local science centers or museums receive free general admission to the Virginia Museum of Natural History. To take advantage of this opportunity, visitors must present their membership card to a participating ASTC Passport Program institution at the box office upon arrival. Some restrictions apply.
Tours
The museum is a self-guided facility. Although the museum does not currently offer tours to the general public, tours may be available to groups of 15 or more, depending on availability. To inquire about the possibility of a tour for your group, please call the museum at 276-634-4141 at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled visit.
Visitors With Disabilities
The museum can provide assistive interpretation for visitors with disabilities. The interpreter is scheduled by appointment only. If an interpreter is needed, please call the museum two weeks prior to the visit. A tour with sign language interpretation may be scheduled by calling the museum two weeks prior to the visit. The museum has both a manual wheelchair and a powered electric wheelchair available for use free on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations). If a wheelchair is needed, please ask the box office staff for assistance. A passenger elevator is also available.
Camera Policy
The museum strives to make every visitor's experience fun, educational and memorable and encourages all visitors to bring a camera with them to help remember their visit. The museum does reserve the right to restrict or prohibit camera use when necessary, at its discretion, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of visitors or to ensure the safety and efficiency of museum operations. If photographs, video or any other forms of recording might be used for reasons other than private use, the museum requires visitors to inform the box office upon arrival.
