Ever wonder how scientists capture insects in the field? The Winkler leaf litter extraction method is one of the most effective procedures. In this video, Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of invertebrate paleontology at VMNH, explains this method and how he plans to use it in his ongoing Ants of Virginia Project, which aims to identify all species of ants living in Virginia.
