The Virginia Museum of Natural History coordinates the annual Virginia Science Institute for STEM Education, begun in 2011. VSISE is the next generation of the award-winning Virginia Science Standards Institutes (VSSI), with support from the Virginia Department of Education, and in partnership with a number of regional organizations, state agencies, and STEM-related businesses. This week-long summer learning experience is for second through fifth grade teachers and is designed to closely support the Science SOL, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and provide detailed training, print, and hands-on resources on the SOL and STEM content and skills. Professional development points toward recertification are available. The institute was underwritten by the Virginia Department of Education.
