The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Is Moving!
The Red-cockaded Woodpecker is a federally endangered species whose northernmost range is southeastern Virginia. There is currently only one colony of this rare bird in Virginia. Now biologists from several private, state and federal agencies, including the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries are preparing to transplant several pairs of young birds to a specially prepared colony site in the Great Dismal Swamp.
