Director of Development

The Virginia Museum of Natural History is seeking a Director of Development to provide dynamic, aggressive leadership in developing and implementing a fundraising program.
The Director of Development is responsible for managing all aspects of fundraising and constituent relations and supervising the Development Department. Fundraising at the Virginia Museum of Natural History is comprehensive in scope and includes annual giving, planned giving, prospect identification, endowment, special programs, and events.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with the Executive Director to establish fundraising goals, priorities and objectives for the Virginia Museum of Natural History Foundation; build and support volunteer leadership for fundraising activities and constituent relations; develop and implement a major gifts program that seeks to identify, research, qualify, cultivate, and solicit top level gifts on the Museum’s behalf. Oversee and coordinate efforts of the Development Department to develop annually an overall long-range and annual plan and goals for all development activities and work toward achieving those goals; provide guidance and support to the Foundation Board of Directors, the Development Chairperson, and its volunteers; oversee and participate in solicitations of individuals, foundations, and corporations; project externally an image of the Virginia Museum of Natural History that reflects honestly and fairly the Museum’s culture; articulate the Museum’s financial and operational needs, goals, objectives and priorities; promote greater interest and involvement in the life of the museum by donors, visitors, and other friends; cultivate future leaders who can assist the Foundation in fundraising, public relations, attendance, etc.; enlist, train, and support volunteers working on the Museum’s behalf; implement a planned giving program at the Museum that encourages trusts, bequests, and other deferred gift opportunities; prepare for the implementation of major capital campaigns when appropriate; oversee the receipting and acknowledgment of gifts and to assure good stewardship of these gifts; participate in staff development and special events committees and attend the Foundation’s board meetings; prepare and present, when appropriate, proposals, grant applications, and follow-through on the process; prepare, submit, and control the department budget.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate for this position will possess:
A Bachelor’s degree
Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in the non-profit sector as a paid staff development member
Excellent writing skills with a versatile writing style
Demonstrated skills in organization, communications and motivation
Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills
Keen attention to details and a healthy persistence in following through
Ability to relate well to a diverse group of volunteers and staff at all levels
Knowledge of computerized donor records system
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Familiarity with Virginia and its various donor communities
Ability to convincingly state an opinion or position
CFRE certification is an ideal
