Dr. Melany R. Clark elected chair

The Virginia Museum of Natural History Board of Trustees has elected Dr. Melany R. Clark, of Ridgeway, as chair. Clark, who was first appointed to the board in 2017 by then-governor Terry McAuliffe, previously held the role of vice chair and was serving as acting chair following the death of Mark J. Buss in March of this year.

“It’s been a privilege to serve the Commonwealth as a trustee for over seven years, and I’m honored to now lead as chair,” said Clark. “Thanks to the thoughtful leadership of Mr. Buss, our board began crafting a bold five-year strategic plan to guide the museum’s next chapter. The museum is vital in advancing scientific discovery, preserving Virginia’s natural heritage, and inspiring learners of all ages. I’m excited to work with my fellow trustees to finalize and execute our vision — one that will expand our statewide impact and elevate the museum’s profile as a premier center for scientific research and education.”

Clark, who serves as Director of Communications and Marketing at myFutureNC, has extensive professional experience in the education, communication, and marketing fields, and has held numerous leadership positions throughout her career, including serving as president of the Southern Piedmont Technology Council and serving as member of the Virginia SOL Innovation Committee.

"Dr. Clark brings a wealth of career knowledge and expertise that will be an asset as the museum continues to build on its accomplishments," said VMNH Executive Director Dr. Joe Keiper. "The museum team looks forward to working with Dr. Clark and the entire board to support staff making new scientific discoveries and providing science education throughout the Commonwealth."

Additionally, the board of trustees elected Lisa Carter, of Urbanna, as vice chair, Will Clements, of Carson, as treasurer, and Lauren Hall, of Roanoke, as secretary. All three will begin their terms as officers on July 1, 2025.

As the governing body of the museum, the Virginia Museum of Natural History Board of Trustees manages, controls, maintains, and operates the museum, appoints the director of the museum, and prescribes rules and regulations for the museum's operation.
