Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of invertebrate zoology, is in Norfolk today at Old Dominion University for the annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ivanov is presenting research on the ant fauna of Virginia's remnant fire adapted sandhill communities.

Yesterday, Dr. Ivanov stopped to conduct field work at one of those sites - the South Quay Sandhills Natural Area Preserve. The site is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, which is working to restore long leaf pine in the area via a combination of burning and selective logging.
