THE MUSEUM IS NOW OPEN ON A LIMITED BASIS

NEW DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATION

The museum is now open to visitors Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is closed all other days. Before visiting the museum, please be sure to note the following:

  • Face coverings are required of all persons aged 10 and over for entry into the museum. The museum will not have facemarks available to visitors. More details below.
  • All visitors are expected to practice proper social distancing inside the museum and outside.
  • Due to crowd size limitations, please note that the museum may have to deny or delay entry to visitors. At this time, the museum is not taking visitation reservations.
  • Some exhibits and public areas will not be accessible. Notably, the museum's Hooker Furniture Discovery Reef, the PALEO Café and some interactive exhibit elements will not be accessible.
  • The museum's Dino Festival, originally scheduled for July 24-25, has been canceled.
  • The museum's Summer Adventure Camps have been canceled.
  • The museum will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and may need to alter this operating schedule or close the museum to visitors again due to health concerns.
  • Please be sure to confirm hours of operation before traveling to the museum.


FACE COVERINGS REQUIRED

The museum is adhering to Executive Order 63 (2020) regarding face coverings. For everyone’s protection, FACE COVERINGS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY FOR ALL PERSONS AGED 10 AND OVER. Face coverings should cover mouth and nose. The requirement to wear a face covering does not apply to the following:

  1. While eating or drinking
  2. Individuals exercising or using exercise equipment
  3. Any person who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without assistance
  4. Any person seeking to communicate with the hearing impaired and for which the mouth needs to be visible
  5. When temporary removal of the face covering is necessary to secure government or medical services
  6. Persons with health conditions that prohibit wearing a face covering.

Nothing in this Order shall require the use of a face covering by any person for whom doing so would be contrary to his or her health or safety because of a medical condition.

  • From June 21 until Labor Day Weekend, the museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • The museum will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and may need to alter this operating schedule or close the museum to visitors again due to health concerns.
  • The museum has special hours during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Holidays.  Please check this website for hours of operation before visiting the museum.
  • Last admission is one half-hour before closing.
  • All hours are subject to change. Please check for any additional closings and delays prior to your visit.

Those who present an EBT card and accompanying ID at the Box Office receive reduced admission rates of $2 for adults (18+) and $1 for children (under 18).  Planning Your Visit

ASTC Passport Program
The Virginia Museum of Natural History is pleased to be a part of the ASTC Passport Program (Association of Science-Technology Centers). The program allows members to sample some of the world's most exciting science centers and museums when they're on vacation or visiting family and friends--and to save money while doing it. Families and adults who are members of their local science centers or museums receive free general admission to the Virginia Museum of Natural History. To take advantage of this opportunity, visitors must present their membership card to a participating ASTC Passport Program institution at the box office upon arrival. Some restrictions apply.

Museum Tours
The museum is a self-guided facility. Although the museum does not currently offer tours to the general public, tours may be available to groups of 15 or more, depending on availability. To inquire about the possibility of a tour for your group, please call the museum at 276-634-4141 at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled visit. 

Visitors with Disabilities
The museum can provide assistive interpretation for visitors with disabilities. The interpreter is scheduled by appointment only. If an interpreter is needed, please call the museum two weeks prior to the visit.  The museum has a manual wheelchair available for use free on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations). If a wheelchair is needed, please ask the box office staff for assistance. A passenger elevator is also available. 

Camera Policy
The museum strives to make every visitor's experience fun, educational and memorable.  All visitors are encouraged to bring a camera with them to help remember their visit. The museum does reserve the right to restrict or prohibit camera use when necessary, at its discretion, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of visitors and to ensure the safety and efficiency of museum operations. If photographs, video or any other forms of recording might be used for reasons other than private use, the museum requires visitors to inform the box office upon arrival.
