This week Dr. Nancy D. Moncrief, curator of mammalogy, is attending the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) annual conference at the University of Idaho. This group is comprised of more than 2,000 professional scientists and their students from universities and museums throughout the world, who study all aspects of the ecology and evolution of wild mammals, especially those that live in North America. More than 500 members attended the conference, which included more than 300 technical presentations. While at the conference, Dr. Moncrief presented information about 2 of her collaborative research projects. Dr. Moncrief is also a member of the ASM Systematic Collections Committee of ASM. Several museum scientists and researchers are in Saltville, Virginia to participate in a paleontology dig that is taking place this week in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the first dig at Saltville. Saltville is a well-known paleontological site that has yielded a wealth of Ice Age fossils since 1917. Members of VMNH and other institutions that have worked the site over the past century are joining together for a ceremonial dig all week long.

Dr. Joe Keiper, executive director of VMNH, and Dr. Elizabeth Moore, curator of archaeology at VMNH, are currently in Smyth County, Virginia to take part in the week-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first research dig in Saltville. Saltville is a well-known fossil site that has yielded a wealth of Ice Age specimens since 1917. Members of VMNH and many other institutions that have worked the site over the past century are participating in the celebration, which is also open to the public.

Full cast skeletons of Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Acrocanthosaurus, Allosaurus and Deinoncyhus, along with a plethora of dinosaur fossils, including... ... A WORLD DEBUT! For the first time ever on public display, fossil evidence that T. rex and Triceratops engaged in battle! All of the fun and games you'd expect a festival of this magnitude to have will be in full abundance! Face-painting, henna, balloon animals, take-home crafts, and everything in between will take place. The museum was happy to host participants of Patrick Henry Community College's Middle School Summer Experience program today! Museum curators and research technicians brought the participants to their labs and collections areas to give them insight into the type of work museum scientists conduct on a daily basis. Even the museum's executive director, Dr. Joe Keiper, gave participants a glimpse into his work as an expert forensic entomologist!
