Goodbye, Dr. Hastings! Today is Dr. Alex Hastings last day as assistant curator of paleontology at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Dr. Hastings will soon become the Fitzpatrick Chair of Paleontology at the Science Museum of Minnesota! Congratulations to Dr. Hastings and best of luck to you in the North Star State! You will be missed!!

Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of recent invertebrates, is in his hometown of Ruse, Bulgaria today and had the opportunity to visit the Eco Museum and Aquarium. Dr. Ivanov was able to meet with museum curators Venci Petkov and Krasi Kirov during his visit and received a personal tour of the exhibits. Here are several pics from his visit!

Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of recent invertebrates, was kind enough to send us a few pictures that he took during his recent visit to the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia, Bulgaria! We thought we'd share them with our friends in social media land! While at the national museum, Dr. Ivanov managed to receive a tour of its collections, which are among the oldest and largest in eastern Europe. Dr. Mario Langourov, a dipterologist at the museum (studies flies), led Dr. Ivanov through the collection. The same day, the national museum opened its newest exhibit "The wild world through the eyes of a zoologist, artist and photographer", which Dr. Ivanov got to experience.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History has received a grant of $97,637 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to improve the care and accessibility of approximately 200 to 540 million-year-old geologic rock core that documents the extent and characteristics of the largest uranium deposit in the United States! Recent considerations of mining the uranium deposit have resulted in increased requests for access to the rock core collection, requiring additional measures to ensure its future health and accessibility. Yesterday in the paleo lab, VMNH curator Alex Hastings and technician Ray Vodden sampled a mastodon leg bone from Ohio's Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. This sample will get sent out for radiocarbon dating to figure out how long ago it died as part of on-going research into the fascinating fossil Carter Bog fauna of Ohio.

If you thought moths were plain and dull, think again! A magnificent series of paintings by artist Deborah Davis is now on display at the museum through September 22. The paintings exquisitely detail the wide array of colors and diversity that these beautiful insects possess. On Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the museum is hosting "Moth Day", featuring a variety of moth-related activities led by Deborah Davis, as well as the museum's resident entomologists Dr. Joe Keiper and Dr. Kal Ivanov.
