Over a dozen Boy Scouts from Troop 130 out of Smith Mountain Lake attended the "Science in Action" sleepover at the museum this past weekend. Scouts had the opportunity to participate in a variety of science-themed activities, enjoy a pizza dinner, and sleep among life-size dinosaur casts! Museum sleepovers aren't just limited to Scouts! Dr. Elizabeth Moore, VMNH Curator of Archaeology, attending a meeting of the Council of Virginia Archaeologists at George Washington's Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm, was pleased to announce the publication of "The Historical Archaeology of Virginia From Initial Settlement to the Present:Overview and New Directions" edited by Dr. Clarence Geier. This joint project with the Archeological Society of Virginia provides valuable information for researchers, students, Virginia land managers, municipal planners, and archaeologists.

Dr. Nancy Moncrief, curator of mammalogy at VMNH, is attending the annual meeting of the Virginia chapter of The Wildlife Society this week in Blacksburg. She presented results of some of her work with VMNH Research Associates Ray Dueser and John Porter. They are studying the ecology and genetics of mammals that live on the Virginia barrier islands.

The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation Classroom and the Charity League of Martinsville-Henry County Classroom recently received a facelift thanks to the artistic skills of the museum's educators! Big changes and additions are coming to the museum this year as we celebrate "The Year of Discovery 2017", marking 10 years in the current museum facility.
