Goodbye and hello! Deinonychus, a life-size cast dinosaur on loan from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, will return to its home in Raleigh on October 11. If you'd like to view Deinonychus before its run at VMNH ends, be sure to check it out inside the Harvest Foundation Hall of Ancient Life in the coming days! While one friend leaves, another returns! Tenontosaurus, another life-size dinosaur cast skeleton, is coming back to VMNH after spending the last 5 months at the Greenwood Museum in South Carolina. Hey Tidewater museum fans! VMNH curators will be in Gloucester Point on Wednesday, October 4 to provide a day-long workshop focussing on the capture and curation methods for studying terrestrial vertebrates and invertebrates! The workshop will provide details about how terrestrial vertebrates and invertebrates are captured for scientific study and how they are prepared and curated as museum specimens for long-term preservation.

This weekend, VMNH paleontologist Alex Hastings gave a virtual presentation to the on-line science enthusiast group Science Circle to chat about ancient crocodiles. Great opportunity to reach an international audience including Australia & the Netherlands, and the organizer even wore a virtual crocodile suit (off to the left in the screen shot).

Although the museum's field work at the Solite Quarry is winding down, the results of extensive digging for Triassic fossils continues to yield scientific acclaim. In two recently published scientific papers, two new species of extinct insects were described based on Solite Quarry fossils that now reside inside the VMNH collections in Martinsville.
