The Virginia Museum of Natural History is excited to offer the opportunity to learn more about the JOIDES Resolution, a scientific research vessel! Juliet Crowell, an educator who recently completed her voyage on the JOIDES Resolution is coming to Martinsville, VA on May 13 -14, 2015. She will be offering hands on and free to the public programming about the ship and the science that goes on there for all ages. The Virginia Museum of Natural History hosted Earth Day Student Day today for over 200 local school children. Students from Drewry Mason and Rich Acres, as well as homeschool students, participated in the event, which was free of charge thanks to the support of American Global Logistics. Representatives from Dan River Basin Association, Philpott Lake, Henry County Public Schools, Laurel Park Middle School's FFA Chapter, and the museum held a variety of hands-on activities that taught children principles in environmental stewardship, as well as how technology and nature can go hand-in-hand. The museum hosted a community meeting today to get input and ideas for the upcoming Museum Without Walls 2015-2020 vision plan. Business leaders, educators, non-profit leaders, and government representatives came together to share a variety of exciting ideas. The information will be compiled and shared in the coming months leading to the launch of Museum Without Walls 2015-2020. Thank you to Sammy Redd, Coordinator of College Access at New College Institute and Past-Chairman of the VMNH Board of Trustees, for serving as moderator of the event.

Big news from VMNH! We're excited to announce that Dr. Alex Hastings has accepted the position of Assistant Curator of Paleontology! Dr. Hastings comes to the museum from Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg, where he is a postdoctoral fellow within the Center for Natural Science Collections. He will begin his duties in July. If he looks familiar to some of you, he was a key team member featured in the Smithsonian Channel's "Titanoboa: Monster Snake". More information will be available in the coming days. Congratulations, Alex!

FREE for children under 3, museum members, and members of ASTC participating institutions
