Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of invertebrate zoology, is in Norfolk today at Old Dominion University for the annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ivanov is presenting research on the ant fauna of Virginia's remnant fire adapted sandhill communities. Yesterday, Dr. Ivanov stopped to conduct field work at one of those sites - the South Quay Sandhills Natural Area Preserve. The site is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, which is working to restore long leaf pine in the area via a combination of burning and selective logging.

We had a great time hosting students from the Henry County Transitional Day Program today! The students took part in a program led by the VMNH education team, toured the exhibits, and stopped for a photo-op in front of the always popular Meg jaw!

Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of invertebrate zoology at VMNH, is at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where staff at the Cleveland museum shared their experience of digitizing its entomology collection. Dr. Ivanov says he learned a lot during his visit that he will be able to implement, when VMNH proceeds with its own collection digitization efforts!

Doodle Bugs offers children ages 3 to 5 the opportunity to experience science and engineering first-hand with hour-long programs that include imaginative stories, fun activities, games and crafts that spark creativity and curiosity. Dr. Kal Ivanov, assistant curator of invertebrate zoology at VMNH, is currently at Breaks Interstate Park in Virginia near the border of Kentucky. Dr. Ivanov is conducting fieldwork with staff from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, as well as helping teach field classes to local grade school and community college students.

Dr. Nancy Moncrief, curator of mammalogy at VMNH, was the featured presenter during the final 2nd Thursday Science Talk of the season yesterday evening. During the presentation, Dr. Moncrief explained the genetic basis for squirrel coat coloration and how two different mutations can result in solid black squirrels. The 2019-20 season of 2nd Thursday Science Talks begins in September! The free presentations give attendees a detailed look into some of the scientific research conducted by museum curators and research associates on a daily basis.
