The Virginia Museum of Natural History hosted its annual Teacher Appreciation Night on the evening of Thursday, November 15. Sixty three teachers from the region took part in the free night of food, drinks and socializing at the museum, while learning about how the museum can support all teachers throughout the year. The museum gives special thanks to Los Nortenos for providing food and drinks for the event!

TEACHERS!!! Dino Day Student Day is Friday, January 11 at the museum and FREE for all Martinsville & Henry County students, and only $1 for all other school districts! Fossil-themed, SOL-based programming will be presented by museum educators, with a plethora of dinosaur displays, full cast skeletons, and even a dino-themed maze for your students to find their way through! Rebecca Wells, director of special education at Henry County Public Schools, along with educational diagnosticians Cynthia Anderson and Debbie Coleman, conducted a presentation to VMNH interpreters about the state of special education in the county school system today at the museum. Museum interpreters are volunteers who play a critical role in helping deliver educational programming, as well as educational tours throughout the museum's exhibits, to school groups throughout the year. The periodic presentations allow interpreters to stay up-to-date about the museum's audiences to better accommodate VMNH visitors. The Virginia Museum of Natural History has received the 2012 SWaM Achievement Award for its outstanding efforts in supporting minority-owned businesses throughout the Commonwealth. The award, part of the Governor's 2012 Supplier Diversity Awards, recognizes state entities that have improved SWaM performance or have the highest percentage of SWaM expenditures over the most recently completed fiscal year based on agency size and total discretionary expenditures.
