The ongoing Solite fossil excavation was recently featured on WDBJ7. This program is funded by a grant from National Geographic.

Museum staff and volunteers have uncovered some amazing fossils at Solite Quarry in recent days! In these images, museum staff piece together the fossils of what might be the largest and best preserved Gymnosperm fossil! Gymnosperms are a group of seed-producing plants and, while their fossils aren't particularly uncommon, finding one as complete as this one is a major discovery! Thanks to funding by National Geographic, staff and volunteers are rapidly digging for fossils at Solite Quarry before the site is no longer open for excavation. The museum's educators provided a demo this evening of the newly built Distance Learning Studio to Dr. Jared Cotton, superintendent of Henry County Public Schools. The museum's Distance Learning Studio features state-of-the-art video, camera, and computer equipment that allows the museum to connect with schools throughout the Commonwealth for live educational programming. It is part of the "A Museum Without Walls" campaign designed to allow everyone throughout the Commonwealth greater access to the museum's resources, educational programming, and scientific research no matter where they are located.

Seniors from McCabe Memorial Baptist Church in Martinsville attended a luncheon at the museum today, which included a catered lunch by the museum's PALEO Café, a presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Moore, curator of archaeology, on the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon, and a tour of the museum. The free event was provided thanks to generous funding by MetLife.
