The museum is conducting a distance learning education program this morning with Indian River Middle School in Canaan, New Hampshire! Distance learning is quickly becoming a popular option for teachers who want to give their students the opportunity to experience museum education programs and resources without having to travel to the museum for an on-site visit. Over 90 students from Mary G. Porter Traditional School in Prince William County took part in the museum's distance learning program "Fossils", led by the museum's talented education staff. The distance learning programs are a critical piece of the museum's "A Museum Without Walls" initiative to allow citizens throughout the Commonwealth to benefit from the museum's educational and research programs without having to travel to the museum. Distance learning education is available to any school with the capability of receiving live video feeds. Programs can be tailored to fit the needs of your students. Over 30 of Pittsylvania County's gifted and talented students visited the museum on Friday, March 14 with teachers, parents and grandparents. Everyone had the opportunity to take part in guided exhibit tours led by the museum's interpreters, and students took part in educational programming in the museum's classrooms and outside in Martinsville's Wilson Park.

Dr. DorothyBelle Poli (right), associate professor of biology at Roanoke College and VMNH research associate, and Dr. Stoneman, scholar of folk tales and lore, gave the presentation "Hunting Dragons: Using fossils to explore lore" on Thursday, March 13 at the museum to a crowd of approximately 40 people. The presentation focussed on how the fossil "Lepidodendron" may be the answer to understanding how the story of dragons came to be in lore. We greatly appreciate Dr. Poli and Dr. Stoneman for presenting at the museum! The next "2nd Thursday Science Talk" is April 10 when Dr. Donna Boyd, eminent professor of anthropological sciences at Radford University will be presenting. More details to follow soon!
